Abstract: Simulated prospective periodic and aperiodic micrometer-scale photonic bandgap (PBG) structures are proposed to develop compact, tunable optical amplifiers and reflectors for the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions. Our configurations combine diverse media—including nematic liquid crystals, polymers, air, and other dielectrics. By strategically tailoring layer thicknesses and material combinations, we are able to engineer customizable optical amplifiers, laser sources, and highly selective bandpass or notch filters. Integrating birefringent liquid crystal mesophases enables for dynamic, real-time tuning of these PBG platforms, vastly expanding their operational versatility in optics, photonics and nanotechnology.
