Title: Orbital angular momentum transfer through the scattering of a Laguerre-Gauss beam by an electron bunch

Abstract: Light beams (solutions of the Maxwell field equations with finite spatial extent or rapidly decaying tails) can carry angular momentum in the form of orbital angular momentum (OAM). In particular, this is true for the Laguerre-Gauss modes of a Gaussian beam, which can nowadays be generated in high-power lasers. A question of practical interest is how this OAM can be transferred by the laser pulse to charged particles, such as electrons.
We numerically integrate the trajectories of electrons under the influence of a short laser pulse, confirming they gain angular momentum from the interaction, then compute the electric and magnetic field patterns observed on a simulated detector, far away from the initial position of the electron bunch. Improving our understanding of this kind of light could help us develop experiments with applications in nuclear physics.
