Abstract:
We present EMT (Electron Momentum Transfer), a program written in C and OpenMP designed to compare the momentum transfer to charged particles interacting with plane wave laser beams, using both the Lorentz force formalism and the relativistic ponderomotive force method. We detail the numerical methods used in simulating the dynamics of the particles, respectively the Higuera-Cary push for the electromagnetic mode, and the fourth-order Runge-Kutta integrator for the ponderomotive mode. We then present the momentum transfer maps, which illustrate the final momentum of a particle after interacting with the laser ensemble, and the error heatmaps for comparing the relative differences between the two models. We continue with a strong scaling performance analysis of the program. Finally, we discuss possible future improvements, such as updating the laser model to a realistic laser mode (such as Laguerre-Gauss), and modifying the code to run on GPUs, using frameworks such as CUDA.
